KU running back Devin Neal ties multiple football records ... while chasing another
Kansas running back Devin Neal has had a memorable senior season.
In KU’s 42-14 blowout win over Houston on Saturday, Neal had himself a day. He rushed for 108 yards on 17 carries with two rushing touchdowns. He has 692 rushing yards and seven touchdowns through seven games this season.
Along the way, he’s moved up the Kansas (2-5, 1-3 Big 12) record books.
After his 5-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter, Neal reached 43 career touchdowns. That tied him with former Jayhawk running back June Henley for the all-time KU record.
It wasn’t the only record Neal tied on Saturday. Neal had his 17th career 100-yard rushing game, which matched Kansas great Tony Sands.
Still, Neal is chasing another record, and he’s close to breaking it: the Jayhawks’ all-time rushing yards record.
He’s 73 yards shy from becoming KU’s all-time leader — Henley is first with 3,841 rushing yards.
Neal is on pace to break it vs. rival Kansas State this coming Saturday.
“I’m honored,” Neal said. “I joke around with the offensive line, but it’s not really a joke — it’s our record. A lot of guys have been with me from the beginning, so I owe them a lot. The receivers, as well.
“It feels great. It’s one of those dreams that I had when I first committed here, and to be at the forefront, knocking at the doors of those (players), it means a lot to me.”
