KU basketball blows out Oklahoma State in Stillwater. Here are three takeaways
As Tuesday night’s game tipped off, those donning the Jayhawk crimson and blue outnumbered those wearing Oklahoma State orange inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Halfway through the second half, that disparity only grew, as the Jayhawks dominated the Cowboys and a large number of OSU fans made an early exit.
No. 3-ranked Kansas blew out Oklahoma State 90-66 on Tuesday in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Hunter Dickinson scored 21 points and Kevin McCullar added 18 more as KU (15-2, 3-1 Big 12) won its sixth straight game against OSU.
The Jayhawks led for 39:12 of game time and never trailed. They went into halftime with a 48-33 lead and never looked back.
Up next: Kansas will travel to Morgantown to play West Virginia on Saturday, Jan. 20.
Until then, here are some takeaways from Tuesday’s game:
Australian sensation Johnny Furphy stars
Kansas freshman Johnny Furphy scored a career-high 15 points against Manhattan earlier in the season.
Well, he had that total in the first half alone on Tuesday. He also shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the field, grabbed four rebounds and blocked two shots in the half.
After getting inserted into the starting lineup last game, Furphy had the best game of his young career on Tuesday.
Within minutes of the game, he was everywhere. First, he had a dunk on a fast break. The very next possession, he made a fast-break layup off a Kansas steal.
Shortly after, he came crashing in for a defensive board and secured it with plenty of Oklahoma State players in the area.
Perhaps the most impressive part? He was a perfect 3-for-3 from 3-point land. He hit three of KU’s four made 3-pointers in the first half.
The Jayhawks have severely lacked a sharpshooter this season, so seeing Furphy hit those shots is a positive development.
He finished with 15 points, shooting 5-for-6 from the field. He added seven rebounds and two assists, plus the two blocks.
KJ Adams shows off the jumper
After KU’s last game, Kansas forward KJ Adams said he was starting to feel more comfortable with his jumper and planned to take more of them.
He did just that against the Cowboys. He took and made two open jump shots in the first half. Both jumpers looked the smoothest they’ve been all season.
On top of that, he did what he usually does — play excellent defense, score inside and facilitate.
Adams finished with 16 points, shooting 8-for-10 from the field, along with five assists and four rebounds.
How about the KU basketball offense?
The Jayhawks had one of their best offensive games of the season against the Cowboys.
OSU looked powerless to stop them, even after switching to zone. KU was much more prepared than it was against UCF in that regard.
KU had all five starters (Furphy, Dickinson, McCullar, Adams and Dajuan Harris) score double-digit points.
Kansas shot 36-for-58 (62.1%) from the floor, including 5-for-13 (38.5%) from deep. The Jayhawks dominated the points in the paint with 46 points, compared to OSU’s 24.
