About Fort Hays State:

FHSU was picked to finish third of 14 teams in the MIAA preseason coaches poll and fourth in the league’s media poll. Northwest Missouri was picked first in both polls. Emporia State was second in the coaches poll while FHSU was third. Central Oklahoma was second and Emporia State third in the media poll ahead of the Tigers. …

Fort Hays State, which went 21-9 a year ago, returns three all-MIAA honorees. All-MIAA first-team selection Kaleb Hammeke, a point guard, averaged 16.4 points, 3.6 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game in 2022-23. He led the MIAA in minutes per game (36.3) and ranked sixth in the conference in scoring and fifth in assists.

Also returning are all-MIAA honorable mention picks Elijah Nnanabu and Bjarni Jonsson. Nnanabu, a guard, averaged 10.3 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game last season. Jonsson, a forward, averaged 8.6 points per game. Jonsson was also named to the MIAA all-defensive team for a second straight season. …

Jonsson, Conner Landell and Petar Asceric give the Tigers three international players. Jonsson, in his fifth year at FHSU, hails from Borgarnes, Iceland and has played with Iceland’s U-20 and U-18 national teams in international competition. Landell, a native of Niagara Falls, Ontario, has also played at Clarendon College and Lamar (Colo.) Community College. Asceric, a native of Belgrade, Serbia, played a year of prep ball at Concord Academy in North Carolina. … Hammeke led the team in 3-point field goals made in 2022-23 with 45. Jonsson hit 47.7% of his 3s (41-of-86).

KU, 94-11 all-time in exhibition games, is 2-2 in its last four exhibitions. The Jayhawks, who lost to Illinois Sunday in a Maui Relief exhibition contest in Champaign, Illinois, went 2-1 in exhibition games played in August in San Juan, Puerto Rico. KU defeated Puerto Rico Select 106-71 and the Bahamian National Team 92-87. KU lost a rematch against the Bahamian Nationals 87-81. KU has lost two exhibition games in a row after rattling off 35 straight victories in practice games. …

KU has won the last 54 exhibition games in Allen Fieldhouse beginning in 1994. … Kansas has scored 100-plus points in 31 exhibition games, including 15 under head coach Bill Self. The Jayhawks are 62-4 in exhibition play in Self’s 21 seasons at KU. … Kansas leads the overall series with Fort Hays State 12-0, including 9-0 in exhibition play. These two teams last met Oct. 24, 2019, an 86-56 KU win in Allen Fieldhouse.

Kansas is No. 1 in the Associated Press preseason poll for the fourth time in poll history, with all four in the Bill Self era — 2004-05, 2009-10, 2018-19 and 2023-24. ... KU has been ranked in the AP top 10 in each of the last 39 polls dating to the 2021-22 preseason poll. The streak of 39 polls is the longest active streak in men’s college basketball.
