Big 12 commissioner: Kansas City could host basketball tournaments ‘for years to come’

The Big 12 and Kansas City are discussing keeping the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments at T Mobile Center through 2031.

“Kansas City has been a great home for the Big 12 basketball championships,” Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark said. “Because of that, we’re currently in discussions on an early extension to keep the championships at T-Mobile Center.”

The men’s tournament has been played in Kansas City 22 times in the league’s 27 seasons. The current deal keeps the event at T-Mobile Center through 2027.

“We’ve been communicating daily,” said Kathy Nelson, president of the Kansas City Sports Commission.

In March of 2024, the women’s tournament will be played in the same building, a week before the men.

“We are excited about the prospect of calling Kansas City home for years to come,” said Yormark, who said the deal could be finalized before this year’s tournaments are played. “We are committed to the Kansas City community.”
