Kansas football receives 1st vote in the preseason coaches poll since the 2009 season

The Kansas Jayhawks received some love from college football coaches in the USA TODAY Sports preseason top 25 that was released on Monday.

Well, by at least one coach.

Although unranked, KU was listed among those receiving votes — with a singular vote. Other Big 12 teams in the “receiving votes” section were Baylor (28), Oklahoma State (12), Houston (3) and BYU (2).

The Big 12 had five teams represented in the preseason top 25: Texas at No. 12, TCU at No. 16, Kansas State at No. 17, Oklahoma at No. 19 and Texas Tech at No. 25.

The Jayhawks haven’t received a single vote in the preseason poll since 2009, when they had 138 total votes and were the first team out of top 25. That year, KU (5-7, 1-7 Big 12) started the season 5-0 and then lost seven straight games.

Since that season, the Jayhawks hadn’t won more than three games in a single year ... until 2022.

KU was last ranked in a preseason coaches poll in 2008, when the Jayhawks were slotted at No. 13.

Last season, KU (6-7, 3-6 Big 12) made its first bowl game appearance in 14 years, a 55-53 triple-overtime loss to Arkansas in the Liberty Bowl. Kansas peaked with No. 17 ranking in the USA Today poll after starting the season 5-0.

Led by preseason Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year Jalon Daniels, the Jayhawks are projected to finish ninth in the 14-team conference according to the Big 12’s preseason media poll.
