Kansas Jayhawks hold steady in new AP Top 25; Wildcats drop ahead of Sunflower Showdown

Kansas, which defeated Iowa State by two points and Oklahoma by four points last week in games played at Allen Fieldhouse, remained No. 2 in the country in the AP Top 25 released on Monday.

Houston, which beat South Florida in Houston, remained No. 1. The Cougars (17-1) received 34 first-place votes to runner-up KU’s 23 firsts. No. 3 Purdue received the other three first-place votes.

Kansas State, which lost to TCU on the road on Saturday after beating Oklahoma State at home Tuesday, fell two slots — from No. 11 to 13. The Wildcats (15-2, 4-1) play host to KU (16-1, 5-0) at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan.

Missouri, No. 20 a week ago, dropped out of the Top 25 after losing to Florida and Texas A&M, both on the road. The Tigers (13-4) this week are in the “others receiving votes” category.

The Jayhawks have been making a bid for their first No. 1 regular-season ranking since the 2019-20 season.

Alabama is No. 4, followed by UCLA (5), Gonzaga (6), Texas (7), Xavier (8), Tennessee (9) and Virginia (10) in the top 10.

Arizona is No. 11 followed by Iowa State, K-State, TCU, UConn, Auburn, Miami, Charleston, Clemson and Marquette in the top 20. Rounding out the poll: No. 21 Baylor, No. 22 Providence, No. 23 Rutgers, No. 24 Florida Atlantic and No. 25 Arkansas.

Others receiving votes: North Carolina State, Saint Mary’s, Arizona State, New Mexico, Illinois, San Diego State, Michigan State, Duke, Wisconsin, Creighton, Kent State, Boise State, Texas A&M, Ohio State, Missouri, VCU, Iowa and North Carolina.
