KU men’s basketball inches closer to No. 1 in AP men’s basketball Top 25: Updated poll

Kansas men’s basketball, which claimed road victories against Texas Tech and West Virginia last week, has moved from No. 3 to No. 2 in the Associated Press Top 25.

Last week’s No. 2 team, Houston (16-1), took the No. 1 slot after winning at home against SMU and at Cincinnati. Purdue (15-1), which was No. 1 last week, fell to No. 3 after losing at home to Rutgers.

Houston received 34 first place votes while KU (14-1) received 22 and Purdue four.

Kansas State (14-1) went from unranked all the way to No. 11, while Missouri (13-2) is No. 20.

The last time KU, MU and K-State were all ranked was the poll of Jan. 6, 2014. KU was No. 18, Mizzou was No. 21 and K-State came in at No. 25. They were ranked 21 times together in polls from 2010-11 to 2012-13.

Houston (1), KU (2) and Purdue (3) are followed by Alabama (4), Tennessee (5), UConn (6), UCLA (7), Gonzaga (8), Arizona (9) and Texas (10) in the top 10.

Then comes No. 11 K-State, followed by Xavier, Virginia, Iowa State, Arkansas, Miami, TCU, Wisconsin, Providence and Missouri in the top 20. Rounding out the poll: No. 21 Auburn, No. 22 Charleston, No. 23 San Diego State, No. 24 Duke and No. 25 Marquette.

Others receiving votes this week: Baylor, Clemson, Florida Atlantic, Indiana, Michigan State, Saint Mary’s, Northwestern, Rutgers, Illinois, Mississippi State, Ohio State, North Carolina State, Creighton, North Carolina, LSU, Pittsburgh, New Mexico and Nevada.
