After Oklahoma State, who’s the starter now for the Jayhawks?

Quarterback Michael Cummings, in his first start of the season in place of Montell Cozart, completed 20 of 37 passes for 288 yards, but Kansas coach Clint Bowen wasn’t ready to proclaim announce him as the starter for next week’s game at Texas Tech.

“We don’t ever give jobs away,” Bowen said. “Every week, every position, they will earn them.

“He brought what we wanted out that position: some leadership, some toughness, a guy people could rally around … not always pretty. Kind of a junk-yard dog type quarterback.”

Cummings, a redshirt junior, hopes he did enough to merit another start.

“I would pick me,” Cummings said. “But I’m not a coach, so we’re going to go out this week and compete as well.”

▪ More than 200 former Kansas players, many wearing their letter jackets, attended the game in support of Bowen, a former Jayhawk, and formed two lines for the players to run through before the game.

The former players included Dan Eichloff, Nick Reid, Keith Loneker, Kwamie Lassiter, Chris Maumalanga and Bowen’s brother, Charley.

“They came to support our team,” Bowen said. “They came to support Kansas. Our players appreciated that. A lot of people made a lot of sacrifices and paved the way for us to have the things we have here at Kansas … the put the blood, sweat and tears in the years before. It was special to have those guys out there.”
