What’s at stake

After two straight Big 12 losses, Kansas will try to stop the bleeding against No. 16 Oklahoma State at Memorial Stadium. For interim head coach Clint Bowen, who enters his second game, the matchup provides another opportunity to set a foundation after a 33-14 loss at West Virginia last week. The Jayhawks fell behind 26-0 in the first half before holding the Mountaineers to just a special-teams touchdown in the second half. For the Kansas offense, it’s an opportunity to gain some traction after another year of struggles.

Cheers if ...

The Kansas passing game shows signs of life. The Jayhawks rank dead last in the Big 12 in passing offense, averaging just 154.6 passing yards. The next-worst team is Texas, which has thrown for 184.8 yards per game. KU’s quarterbacks are also last in completion percentage (50 percent).

Jeers if ...

The Jayhawks commit more than 10 penalties again. Last week, the Jayhawks committed 11 penalties for 101 yards. When your offense only finishes with 176 total yards, the mental errors are even more damaging.

Three things about xxxxxx

1 Oklahoma State junior quarterback Daxx Garman assumed the starting role after an early-season injury to starter J.W. Walsh. In four games since, Garman is completing 58.6 percent of his passes while throwing for an even 1,200 yards.

2 Since the start of the 2010 season, Oklahoma State is 34-4 against teams not ranked in the Associated Press top 25 poll. The Cowboys have also won 11 of 12 against unranked opponents. Their only loss this season came against No. 1 Florida State.

3 Oklahoma State has not lost in Lawrence since 1994; the Cowboys escaped in a 20-14 victory over the Jayhawks in 2012 — Charlie Weis’ first year at Kansas.

Key matchup

KU secondary vs. Oklahoma State quarterback Daxx Garman. This Cowboys’ offense isn’t as high-powered as some of head coach Mike Gundy’s offenses. But Oklahoma State still ranks fifth in the Big 12 in scoring at 39.2 points per game. Garman can also hit on the big play; in four games, he’s completed eight passes for 40 yards or more.

Rustin Dodd's pick: Oklahoma State 34-17

The Jayhawks showed some fight in the second half against West Virginia, but until the offensive issues are ironed out, it’s going to be difficult to keep up with a high-scoring program like Oklahoma State. If Kansas wants to have a chance, they need to force turnovers and limit their penalties.
