Former KU Jayhawk David McCormack to play for Minnesota Timberwolves in summer league
Former University of Kansas basketball power forward David McCormack will play for the Minnesota Timberwolves’ NBA summer league team July 7-18 in Las Vegas.
McCormack, a 6-10, 250-pound native of Norfolk, Virginia, will participate as part of his non-guaranteed, Exhibit 10 contract with the Wolves. McCormack’s agent, Gary Durrant informed Yahoo Sports ‘ Chris Haynes of the deal on Friday night.
If McCormack plays well in Vegas he could be invited to preseason veterans camp in late September and possibly have his contract converted to a two-way contract that would allow him to play for the Timberwolves as well as Minnesota’s G League team in Des Moines, Iowa.
Other teams will be able to scout McCormack in Vegas and extend offers should the Timberwolves decide to not bring him to training camp.
McCormack was not selected in the two-round, 58-player NBA Draft (Milwaukee and Miami lost their second-round picks for violating the NBA’s tampering rules during free agency) held Thursday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
He worked out for several teams, including Atlanta, Minnesota, Washington and the Los Angeles Lakers during the predraft process. He also interviewed with several teams at the G League Elite camp in May.
At the G League camp, McCormack measured 6-10 3/4 inches with shoes, 6-9 1/4 barefoot. He weighed in at 260.6 pounds with a 7-2 wingspan and 9-0 standing reach. He had 12.8% body fat, second highest of the 44 combine players. Kenny Lofton of Louisiana Tech’s body fat was 15.15%.
McCormack averaged 10.6 points and 7.0 boards a game in 2021-22 for KU’s 2022 national championship team. He hit 50.8% of his shots and 75.8% of his free throws. He had 33 blocks in 40 games.
KU’s Ochai Agbaji was the No. 14 overall pick in the draft (by Cleveland) and Christian Braun the No. 21 pick (by Denver).
McCormack’s Timberwolves will meet Braun’s Nuggets at 8 p.m., Central time, July 8 in Vegas in the summer league opener for both teams. The game will be shown on NBA TV.
