Gov. Laura Kelly greeted Jayhawks players and coaches in the statehouse Monday afternoon and read a proclamation declaring April 25, 2022, KU Men’s Basketball National Championship Victory Day across Kansas.

The proclamation noted the team’s achievements this season and throughout the history of college basketball.

“The celebration of the Jayhawks’ historic win and continued legacy of success will, undoubtedly, mark this year’s team’s rightful place in men’s college basketball history, as well as honor previous KU rosters that helped build the program to achieve this accolade,” the proclamation said.

The Jayhawks claimed their fourth NCAA men’s basketball championship this month with a 72-69 victory over North Carolina in New Orleans, overcoming the largest deficit and halftime deficit in a men’s title game victory. The win capped off a 34-6 season in which KU overtook Kentucky for the most victories in NCAA men’s Division I history.

Kansas coach Bill Self, who presented Kelly with a basketball during the event, also became the only active NCAA men’s coach with more than one national title. He said earlier this month that the White House has initiated discussions with KU regarding possible dates when the 2022 champions might be able to travel to Washington, D.C. to meet President Biden.
