Miami Hurricanes, not Big 12’s Iowa State, will play Kansas Jayhawks in Elite Eight

The Kansas Jayhawks will need to defeat former KU player Charlie Moore’s Miami Hurricanes if they wish to advance to the men’s Final Four in New Orleans.

Moore, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound sixth-year senior from Chicago, who has also played at Cal and DePaul during his college career, scored seven points on 2-of-8 shooting and dished nine assists against three turnovers while playing 38 minutes in Friday’s 70-56 Sweet 16 victory over No. 11 seed Iowa State at the United Center.

The No. 10 seed Hurricanes (26-10), who meet KU at 1:20 p.m. Sunday (CBS), were led Friday by former Oklahoma Sooner Kameron McGusty, who scored 27 points on 10-of-18 shooting in 36 minutes. McGusty is a 6-5, 190-pound guard from Katy, Texas.

Jordan Miller, a few 6-7 junior guard from Middleburg, Virginia, scored 16 points with seven rebounds versus the Cyclones, while Sam Waardenburg, a 6-10 senior from New Zealand, contributed 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Iowa State (22-13) was led by Gabe Kalscheur and Tyrese Hunter, who scored 13 points apiece. Kalscheur hit 6 of 16 shots and had four rebounds and six turnovers. Hunter hit 6 of 14 shots with seven assists and four boards.

Also, Izaiah Brockington had 11 points on 5-of-16 shooting with seven rebounds and four turnovers. Aljaz Kunc had nine rebounds and two points. Former KU wing Tristan Enaruna did not score in three minutes.

The Cyclones reached the Sweet 16 after a 2-22 season a year ago by beating Wisconsin and LSU. Miami has beaten ISU, Auburn and USC in the tournament.
