Kansas Jayhawks basketball’s Ochai Agbaji picks up prestigious All-American honor

Kansas Jayhawks guard Ochai Agbaji is halfway toward becoming a unanimous All-American.

Agbaji added to his honors Tuesday, as he was named first-team All-America by the Associated Press. He previously earned the same distinction from the Sporting News, meaning he just needs first-team status from the United States Basketball Writers Association and National Association of Basketball Coaches to earn unanimous first-team merit.

KU’s last player to earn first-team AP All-America status was Devonte’ Graham in 2018. Others under coach Bill Self were Wayne Simien (2005), Thomas Robinson (2012) and Frank Mason (2017).

The rest of the AP All-America first-team list in 2021-22 was Kofi Cockburn (Illinois), Oscar Tshiebwe (Kentucky), Johnny Davis (Wisconsin) and Keegan Murray (Iowa). The same players plus Agbaji also made Sporting News’ first team.

Agbaji, from Kansas City, is averaging 19.7 points per game for top-seeded KU. He previously won Big 12 player of the year, and last week, he was voted most outstanding player of the Big 12 Tournament.

KU will open the NCAA Tournament against either Texas Southern and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 8:57 p.m. Thursday at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. The contest will be televised on TruTV.
