Big 12 fines, reprimands Texas Longhorns for court-storming following win over Kansas

The Big 12 Conference on Wednesday issued a public reprimand and $25,000 fine of the University of Texas for its “handling of the court storming that occurred at the conclusion of Monday’s men’s basketball game vs. the University of Kansas.”

Fans stormed from the Frank Erwin Center stands onto the court in Austin, Texas after the final horn sounded in the No. 20-ranked Longhorns’ 79-76 victory over No. 8 Kansas. KU coach Bill Self said on his Hawk Talk radio show Tuesday that Remy Martin had his injured knee “bumped” as he was leaving the court.

The contact to Martin’s knee doesn’t figure to affect the guard’s recovery from his bone-bruise injury, but the contact was “significant to him because he’s still so sore,” Self said.

The Big 12 issued the fine and reprimand in accordance with the league’s Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct policies.

Conference commissioner Bob Bowlsby released a statement on the court-storming Wednesday.

“Our host institutions have a duty to ensure an environment that provides the visiting team and game officials a safe exit from the court,” Bowlsby said in the statement. “In this instance, execution of the University’s court storming plan did not adequately provide the protections necessary to safe-guard visiting team personnel.”
