Kansas Jayhawks move up two spots in AP men’s basketball poll after 2-0 week
Kansas, which claimed a pair of victories against ranked teams Iowa State and Baylor last week, has climbed two spots from No. 10 to No. 8 in this week’s Associated Press men’s college basketball poll.
The Jayhawks (19-3, 8-1 in Big 12) defeated then-No. 20 Iowa State, 70-61, on Tuesday in Ames, Iowa and handled then-No. 8 Baylor, 83-59, on Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse. Baylor is No. 10 in this week’s poll, while Iowa State is now in the “others receiving votes” category.
Texas (17-6, 6-4), KU’s opponent on Monday night (8 p.m. at Frank Erwin Center), moved from No. 23 to No. 20 this week after losing to Texas Tech, 77-64, on Tuesday in Lubbock, Texas and defeating Iowa State, 63-41, Saturday in Austin.
Auburn (22-1), which took over the top spot in the poll two weeks ago for the first time in school history, remained No. 1 followed by Gonzaga (19-2), Purdue (20-3), Arizona (19-2), Kentucky (19-4), Houston (20-2), Duke (19-3), KU (19-3), Texas Tech (18-5), Baylor (19-4), Providence (20-2), UCLA (16-4), Illinois (17-5), Wisconsin (18-4), Villanova (17-6), Ohio State (14-5), Michigan State (17-5), Marquette (16-7), Tennessee (16-6), Texas (17-6), USC (19-4), Saint Mary’s (19-4), Murray State (22-2), UConn (15-6) and Xavier (16-6). Others receiving votes: Wyoming, Arkansas, Iowa State, Davidson, Boise State, Wake Forest, Alabama, Loyola Chicago, LSU, Indiana, Iowa, Oregon, San Francisco, Notre Dame and Ohio.
Auburn, which has won 19 straight games since a double-overtime loss to UConn in November, earned 48 of 61 first-place votes to remain in front of Gonzaga, which earned the other 13 votes.
