Auburn ascends to No. 1 in AP men’s basketball poll; KU Jayhawks move up two spots

Kansas on Monday moved up two spots — from No. 7 to No. 5 — in the latest Associated Press men’s basketball poll.

Auburn, which beat Kentucky on Saturday, passed Gonzaga to take over the top spot in the poll for the first time in Auburn school history.

Texas Tech, Kansas’ opponent on Monday night at Allen Fieldhouse, jumped five spots to No. 13 in the poll.

Auburn received 45 first-place votes to Gonzaga’s 15 firsts. No. 3 Arizona received one first-place vote. Auburn totaled 1,504 points to Gonzaga’s 1,475.

Auburn (18-1), Gonzaga (15-2) and Arizona (16-1) were followed by Baylor (17-2), KU (16-2) and Purdue (16-3). Houston (17-2) and UCLA (13-2) tied at No, 7, followed by Duke (15-3), Michigan State (15-3), Wisconsin (15-3), Kentucky (15-4), Texas Tech (15-4), Villanova (14-5), USC (16-2), Ohio State (12-4), Providence (16-2), Tennessee (13-5), LSU (15-4), UConn (13-4), Xavier (14-4), Marquette (14-6), Iowa State (14-5), Illinois (13-5) and Davidson (16-2).

Others receiving votes: BYU, Alabama, Texas, Colorado State, Florida State, Loyola Chicago, Oregon, Wake Forest, Indiana, Murray State, Iowa, TCU, Miami, Florida, Boise State, Saint Mary’s, Wyoming, Iona and Seton Hall.

KU last week won a pair of road games versus Oklahoma and Kansas State. Texas Tech won home games versus Iowa State and West Virginia.

Tipoff for the KU-Texas Tech game is 8 p.m. Monday at Allen Fieldhouse.
