Purdue is the new No. 1, Kansas remains No. 8 in AP men’s college basketball poll

Purdue was awarded the No. 1 spot in the Associated Press college men’s basketball poll on Monday following previous No. 1 Duke’s loss to Ohio State.

Purdue (8-0) was ranked No. 2 a week ago. This marks the first time in program history Purdue has been ranked No. 1 in the AP poll. The Boilermakers were a unanimous pick for No. 1.

Kansas remains No. 8 in the poll following Friday’s 95-75, victory over St. John’s in Elmont, New York. KU has won two in a row heading into Tuesday’s game against UTEP (7 p.m. at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City).

Purdue was followed by Baylor, Duke, UCLA, Gonzaga, Villanova, Texas, KU, Alabama, Kentucky, Arizona, Arkansas, Tennessee, Houston, UConn, USC, Iowa State, Auburn, Michigan State, Florida, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Seton Hall, BYU and LSU. Oklahoma and Texas Tech also received votes this week.

Purdue was ranked as high as No. 2 in consecutive seasons under Gene Keady from 1986-88. The Boilermakers matched their previous high last week, receiving nine first-place from the national panel of 61 individuals.
