Kansas Jayhawks football announces staff changes. Here are the 2 assistants leaving
Kansas Jayhawks football coach Lance Leipold announced a pair of staff changes Monday, moving on from a couple assistants who had been with the program for three seasons.
Defensive line coach Kwahn Drake and cornerbacks coach Chevis Jackson will not return next year. Both were initially hired by former coach Les Miles in 2019.
In addition, Leipold said the two coaches’ in-house replacements — analysts Jordan Peterson and Taiwo Onatolu — will move to on-field roles.
Peterson coached KU’s safeties in 2020 — and was the team’s interim defensive coordinator in the final game that season against Texas Tech — before moving into an analyst role this past year.
Onatolu, meanwhile, was defensive ends coach for two years under Leipold at Buffalo. He also previously coached defensive backs.
Leipold did not declare Onatolu’s new assistant title with KU.
The most recent changes mean that Leipold now has seven of his 10 on-field assistant coaches from his final year at Buffalo with him at KU: Rob Ianello (GM), Brian Borland (defensive coordinator), Andy Kotelnicki (offensive coordinator), Chris Simpson (linebackers), Jim Zebrowski (quarterbacks), Scott Fuchs (offensive line) and Onatolu.
