Here’s how long it’s been since KU football won a Big 12 road game (before Texas)
Kansas football’s 57-56 overtime victory over Texas on Saturday night not only was monumental for coach Lance Leipold’s rebuild ... it also brought to an end one of the program’s historic streaks.
Before Saturday, KU had lost 56 straight Big 12 road games — a skid dating all the way back to Oct. 4, 2008, when the Jayhawks defeated Iowa State, 35-33, in Ames, Iowa.
Here are some facts about that win and also the significance of KU’s triumph Saturday:
• Mark Mangino was KU’s coach for that 2008 victory over Iowa State. Since then, KU has had five full-time coaches (Turner Gill, Charlie Weis, David Beaty, Les Miles and Leipold) and also had Clint Bowen serve as interim coach for eight games in the 2014 season.
• KU actually trailed 20-0 at halftime in that contest. The Jayhawks came back with help from quarterback Todd Reesing’s 319 passing yards.
• George W. Bush was president of the United States. One month later, Barack Obama was elected as the 44th President.
• iPads were two years from being introduced to the public. Those were first released by Apple in 2010.
• KU’s 56-game road losing streak was the longest in college football history, according to College Football Reference. The previous record of 44 was set by the Sewanee (Tennessee) Tigers from 1931-1939.
