KU Jayhawks coach Bill Self on Oklahoma State losing NCAA appeal: ‘It surprised me’
Oklahoma State’s men’s basketball team has been banned from the 2022 NCAA Tournament after the Cowboys on Wednesday lost an appeal of their NCAA infractions case tied to the FBI’s investigation into college basketball.
The Cowboys had been allowed to compete in the 2021 tournament while an infractions case, one in which they were found guilty of violations, was appealed.
KU coach Bill Self, a former player and assistant coach at Oklahoma State, was asked about the Cowboys’ case Wednesday after the Jayhawks’ 86-60 exhibition victory over Emporia State at Allen Fieldhouse.
“It’s surprising. That was the penalty I guess 17 months ago. And what they (NCAA appeals committee) did was they upheld it,” Self said. “It surprised me and I hate it for our league. I hate it for Mike (Boynton, OSU coach). I hate it for the players, all those things, and so, yes, I was disappointed for them no question.”
KU has its own infractions case pending. The NCAA has alleged five Level I violations against KU’s men’s basketball program and Self. The case currently is ongoing as part of the Independent Accountability Review Process.
Based off a publicly revealed timeline, KU is not expected to receive a ruling until after the 2021-22 season.
