Remy Martin doesn’t start in Kansas basketball debut but scores 15 in exhibition win

(Updated story: Remy Martin on not starting in KU debut: ‘I haven’t been doing my part of the deal’)

Kansas’ men’s basketball players, who gathered for practices at 6:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. in response to what coach Bill Self deemed poor workout sessions of late, returned Wednesday night to Allen Fieldhouse to defeat Emporia State, 86-60, in their first and only exhibition game of the 2021-22 preseason.

In an apparent attempt to shake things up prior to Tuesday’s regular-season opener against Michigan State, Self went with senior walk-on guard Chris Teahan in the starting lineup over Big 12 preseason player of the year Remy Martin. The other starters were Dajuan Harris, Christian Braun, Ochai Agbaji and David McCormack.

Martin, who entered with 13:44 left in the first half (Joseph Yesufu was the first guard to sub for Teahan) scored 11 points in his first six minutes of game action as a Jayhawk. At half, Martin had 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting. He finished with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting with four assists in 18 minutes.

Martin hit his first four shots as a Jayhawk.

The 6-foot senior transfer from Arizona State canned a 12-foot fadeaway jumper, a driving layup, a 15-foot fadeaway jumper and a deep three-pointer. After a miss, he made another driving layup. Martin also had an early assist to Zach Clemence.

Agbaji scored 14 points the first half as KU grabbed a 51-25 lead and finished with 17 points and seven boards.

McCormack scored 16 points with eight rebounds. Braun had 10 points, three boards and three assists.

Teahan by the way, finished with one rebound in seven minutes. He also started the final half.

Emporia State was led by Tray Buchanan, who had 19 points. He was 11 of 11 from the free-throw line. Mayuom Buom had 14 points and Jumah’Ri Turner 13.

KU sophomore Jalen Wilson served the first game of a four-game suspension Wednesday and did not suit up for the game. KU coach Self assessed the penalty following Wilson’s arrest early Sunday morning for suspicion of DUI.

Jalen Coleman-Lands did not play because of a sore toe. He’s listed a day-to-day.

KU will meet Michigan State at 6 p.m. Central time Tuesday in New York.
