KU Jayhawks football linebacker rejoins team after charges against him are dropped
Kansas redshirt freshman linebacker Alonso Person is back with the Jayhawks football team after charges against him for domestic battery and kidnapping were dropped by the Douglas County District Attorney’s office.
Person, who was arrested by Lawrence police on suspicion of those charges in August, had both charges dismissed on Oct. 13, according to Douglas County court records. District attorney’s office spokeswoman Jill Jess said a Kansas court rule of professional conduct prohibited the office from giving further details — beyond the public record — about why the case was dropped. Douglas County District Judge B. Kay Huff ordered that the arrest affidavit in Person’s case remain sealed.
According to a KU Athletics spokesperson, Person — he was suspended indefinitely by coach Lance Leipold following the initial charges in August — rejoined the team after the case was dismissed. Since then, Person has been going through a re-acclimation period, not participating in practices but instead going through individual drills to work his way back into shape following his time away.
Person, a 6-foot-3 linebacker from Harbor City, California, had previously missed KU’s first eight training-camp practices before his suspension, likely because of COVID protocols. He was a three-star Rivals prospect out of high school and redshirted last year during his first season in Lawrence.
