KU has new football schedule: ‘We will continue to prepare for our season cautiously’
The Kansas football team has a new schedule but the same opening Big 12 opponent.
As it stands now, the Jayhawks will open conference play at Baylor on Sept. 26, as the Big 12 officially announced its revised slate Wednesday.
KU’s nine league games are spread out between Sept. 26 and Dec. 5. As of Wednesday, the Jayhawks do not have a non-conference game listed, though that still could change.
“We are excited to be able to move forward with the updated schedule and compete this fall,” KU coach Les Miles said in a news release from the school. “We will continue to prepare for our season cautiously, while also relying on the direction and oversight of Kansas Team Health medical professionals to provide our players with a game plan that promotes their health and safety.”
KU’s home and road dates under the altered schedule remain the same. The Jayhawks are slated to host Oklahoma State, Iowa State, Texas and TCU while facing Baylor, West Virginia, Kansas State, Oklahoma and Texas Tech on the road.
“We have known since the shutdown last spring that it would be a challenge to play college sports during this pandemic,” KU athletic director Jeff Long said in a release. “That said, we are confident the additional testing protocols instituted by the members of the Big 12 Conference will allow those student-athletes who choose to move forward and compete the ability to do so this fall.”
The Jayhawks originally were supposed to play New Hampshire, Boston College and Coastal Carolina as non-league opponents. New Hampshire announced July 17 it would not be playing fall sports, and KU followed a week later by adding Southern Illinois as a replacement.
That game will not happen as scheduled, though, because of the Big 12 pushing back the start of the season. KU, under league rules for 2020, can have one non-conference opponent, so the possibility is still there for the Jayhawks to still play either Southern Illinois or a different non-Big 12 foe if it can get a new contest scheduled.
