KU walk-on Elliott enters name in transfer portal; Keon Coleman to announce on July 4

Kansas redshirt sophomore walk-on guard Elijah Elliott has entered his name in the transfer portal, KU basketball coach Bill Self told The Star on Friday.

“He is investigating potential opportunities,” Self said.

In fact no decision on leaving or staying has yet been made final as of Friday night by the 6-foot-3 Elliott, who is exploring the possibility of gaining playing time at other schools.

Elliott, a native of Southlake, Texas, who redshirted his first season at KU in 2018-19, played a total of 21 minutes in nine games as a redshirt freshman in 2019-20.

He scored seven points total with three assists and two turnovers. He hit 3 of 4 shots including his only three-point attempt as a Jayhawk.

Elliott averaged 7.4 points per game his junior year at Advanced Preparatory International High School in Dallas. He spent his senior year working out at IMG Academy in Florida before returning to Carroll High in Southlake to finish his studies.

Keon Coleman to announce on July 4

Keon Coleman, a 6-4, 190-pound senior football/basketball player from Opelousas (Louisiana) Catholic High School, who has narrowed his college choices to Kansas, South Carolina and Oklahoma, will announce his college choice on July 4, he has announced on Twitter.

Coleman, who caught 35 passes for 1,143 yards (32.7 yards per catch) and 22 touchdowns in his junior season, on Monday cut Michigan State, Florida State and Mississippi from his previous list of six schools. He also received football scholarship offers from Baylor, Louisville, Miami, Kentucky, Penn State and several other schools. In basketball, the unranked player received offers from Louisiana Tech, Nicholls State, Coastal Carolina and Louisiana-Lafayette.

He recently spoke with KU football coach Les Miles and basketball coach Self on a Zoom call. The plan is he would play both sports at KU.

Of Coleman, Gabe Brooks of 247sports.com wrote: “Owns terrific frame for elite wideout prospect. Tall and long with a ton of frame space to add bulk. Dynamic, explosive athlete who competes in football, basketball, and track and field. Division I-caliber prospect in football and basketball. Electric leaper. Produces highlight reel dunks on the hardwood and impressive ball-winning plays on the gridiron. Big-play machine. Also dominant at defensive back with seven INT’s. Not only explosive but shows encouraging dexterity as an athlete. Long-striding speed-builder who stretches the field vertically. Plays fast enough but can get faster in his long speed. Will face significant jump in competition going from small-school ball to high-major level. Raw technically in footwork and route-running. Basketball nimbleness does not always translate to field. Regardless, elite athlete with very promising overall profile. Power 5-caliber recruit who possesses a high ceiling with long-term potential to reach the NFL Draft.”

Davison cuts list to KU, nine others

JD Davison, a 6-3 senior point guard from Calhoun High School in Letohatchee, Alabama, who is ranked No. 15 in the recruiting class of 2021 by Rivals.com, has narrowed his list to 10 according to Stockrisers.com. They are: KU, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Memphis, Louisville, Arkansas, Florida, Florida State and Alabama.

Appelhans hears from KU coaches

Braden Appelhans, a 6-6 junior wing out of Blue Springs High School and the KC Run GMC program, tells The Star he has heard from coaches from KU, Kansas State, Missouri, Florida State, Bradley, Drexel, South Dakota State, Wyoming, Drake, Belmont, Northern Colorado, Creighton, SE Missouri, Saint Louis U, Nebraska-Omaha, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, Idaho and Utah State.
