Kansas working on men’s basketball home-and-home series with Gonzaga

Kansas and Gonzaga are in negotiations to play a home-and-home series in men’s basketball.

Sources close to KU’s basketball program confirmed on Saturday a (Spokane, Washington) Spokesman-Review report that the Jayhawks and Zags are working on a two-year series.

The first game would likely be played in Allen Fieldhouse in December of 2022 with a return trip to the Zags’ McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane in December of 2023.

“We are in discussions,“ the KU source told The Star on Saturday. “Have been a while. Definitely a possibility. But details not finalized. And we hope it works out.”

KU (28-3) finished first and Gonzaga (31-2) second in the final Associated Press poll of the 2019-20 season. The Spokesman-Review’s Jim Meehan pointed out the programs “also rank one-two nationally in winning percentage over the last decade. The Zags are first with a 308-51 record (85.8%) with the Jayhawks second at 299-66 (81.9%).”

KU is 1-0 all-time against Gonzaga. The Jayhawks won 80-66 on Nov. 13, 1988 in Allen Fieldhouse.

Fans have asked KU coach Bill Self the past two seasons on his Hawk Talk radio show about possibly playing Gonzaga in the future. He said both times the teams would like to play.
