‘It would be cool,’ Self says of a KU Final Four that would reunite Doke with his mom

KU senior center Udoka Azubuike said during his Senior Night speech that his mother, Florence Azuonuwu, would attend the 2020 Final Four in Atlanta if the Jayhawks can make it that far in the NCAA Tournament.

She traveled from Delta, Nigeria, for the 2018 Final Four in San Antonio, Texas during her son’s sophomore season.

“It would be cool,” KU coach Bill Self said on Monday’s Hawk Talk radio show. “Hopefully her visa has not expired. That was one of the big things last time. We had to get politicians involved to expedite something (the visa) Thanks to many people politically for playing a role that helped her get here.

“Hopefully that table is set if we are fortunate enough to win a few games.”

Self said he truly respects Azuonuwu for allowing her son to move to the United States for high school.

“It’s unbelievable a parent would allow her child at 13 to move to another country and say, ‘Maybe I’ll see you in five years.’ To love her son so much to give him a chance at a better life, a different path. To me those are stories that make college athletics so great,” Self said.
