KU’s Moss, Azubuike speak to fans after win over TCU: ‘Let’s go to Atlanta’

Udoka Azubuike spoke for just over 13 minutes and Isaiah Moss a little over a minute during the annual speech portion of Senior Night on Wednesday in Allen Fieldhouse.

The two players, who helped KU claim a Big 12 title clinching 75-66 victory over TCU, had the fans cheering when they both offered a positive look into the future.

“We are going to do all we can to bring a national championship to you all. Rock Chalk!” Moss, a 6-foot-5 guard from Chicago, told the fans after scoring five points on 2-of-9 shooting with five rebounds, three assists and a steal in 37 minutes.

Azubuike, a 7-footer from Delta, Nigeria, was just as hopeful about the postseason, telling the crowd after scoring 31 points, grabbing 14 rebounds and blocking five shots in 35 minutes: “We’re not done yet. Let’s go to Atlanta. Rock Chalk!”

He noted to the fans that he’d be able to see his mom in Atlanta if the Jayhawks reach the 2020 Final Four. She apparently is planning on making the trip from Nigeria if the Jayhawks advance in the postseason. She attended the 2018 Final Four in San Antonio during her son’s sophomore season.

Moss, a graduate transfer from the University of Iowa, thanked coach Bill Self for all his instruction during Moss’s one season at KU.

“Coach Self … he pushed me hard, brought something out of me I didn’t know I had. I appreciate it.” Moss said.

He added that, “I don’t think there could be a better way to end the season than win a Big 12 championship.”

Azubuike also thanked Self and other coaches, including Norm Roberts, who recruited him in high school.

“You’ve been a leader to me, consistent in everything you do,” Azubuike said to Self. “You taught me about life, hard work, being consistent, never giving up. I appreciate you for real.”
