Kansas Jayhawks basketball fans, here’s a new way to get news about your team

Hey, Jayhawks fans. I wanted to let you know about something new we’re trying here at The Star to get you closer to your favorite team.

Often, it seems like the conversation between reporter and reader can be one-sided. And even those settings on social media where back-and-forth feedback is possible (read: Twitter), good conversation can often be lost simply because it’s tough to rise above the commotion and trolls.

We’re looking into something that can change the dialogue. We’re launching a text message service called Subtext for KU fans, and in short, it will allow me to communicate directly to you, while — just as importantly — giving you the opportunity to send thoughts and questions back to me as it relates to the Jayhawks.

My hope is that this can better personalize your relationship with me specifically at The Star, while at the same time giving you a more direct connection to the KU coverage we’re providing already.

We’ll be listening to your thoughts and I will text updates that subscribers are wanting most, whether that’s breaking news or analysis on the most-talked-about Jayhawks topics.

If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, follow the link below for two free weeks. Don’t worry, there’s no obligation here; if at any point in those two weeks you’re ready to opt out, just reply “STOP,” and you won’t hear from us again.

As a thank you to those who are KC Star subscribers or have our annual Sports Pass, we have an even better offer for a limited time: Sign up following the link in this story, and you’ll get texts from us for free from now until the end of the KU basketball season.

Some other details as well: While I’ll be sending out a group text while doing this, replies you send will only come to me. So you don’t have to worry about getting caught up in any annoying “reply all” messages ... that won’t be happening here.

Also, be assured we’re getting your number simply to send you these text messages. To be clear, we aren’t selling this information to third parties or gathering it for future abuse. This is only to send you some text messages about KU basketball, and as mentioned above, the word “STOP” will allow you to opt out from those at any time.

I’m excited about the possibilities. I hope you’ll take some time to sign up, then follow through after that by sending me a direct message.

The goal here will be working to cater our KU coverage to you, and hopefully, this new service will help us to achieve just that.
