KU Jayhawks football vs. TCU Horned Frogs: Kickoff time, TV, Five things to know

Kansas football, heading into Week 8 of 12, appears to be back to the start when it comes to the quarterbacks.

KU coach David Beaty, when asked about the position during Monday’s Big 12 teleconference, didn’t commit to previous-game starter Peyton Bender.

“We’ll look at who has the best week, and we’ll make a decision going from there,” Beaty said.

After firing offensive coordinator Doug Meacham two weeks ago, Beaty is the team’s QBs coach, so the choice should be completely up to him.

Whether he’s actually mulling a change or just trying to keep a competitive advantage — he’s done that often in the past — will likely remain a mystery in the days leading up to Saturday’s home game against TCU.

The details

Kickoff: 2 p.m. Saturday

Where: Booth Memorial Stadium, Lawrence

TV: FS1

Radio: WHB (810 AM) in Kansas City, KFH (1240 AM) in Wichita

The line: TCU by 14 1/2

Five things to know

  1. Usually close: In the last five years, the KU-TCU matchup has typically been a competitive affair. KU lost 34-30 at home in 2014, 23-17 on the road in 2015, then 24-23 at Memorial Stadium in 2016. That was before last year’s 43-0 TCU blowout.
  2. Embarrassing defeat: KU’s loss in Fort Worth last year was one of the worst offensive performances in the modern era of college football. The Jayhawks’ 21-yard output was the lowest by an FBS team since at least 1997. KU also never advanced the ball past its own 43 and had minus-25 rushing yards.
  3. Solid on defense: TCU ranks second in the Big 12 in total defense, allowing 5.0 yards per play. That’s fractional percentage points behind Iowa State, which also sits at 5.0.
  4. TCU missing a key player? TCU receiver/returner KaVontae Turbin, who ranks second in the Big 12 in all-purpose yards, was arrested Sunday after being accused of assault with bodily injury of a family member, according to jail logs. Turpin had two touchdowns — including a 99-yard kickoff return — in Saturday’s 52-27 loss to Oklahoma.
  5. Grounded offenses: KU and TCU are the two worst passing teams in the Big 12 when it comes to yards per attempt. The Horned Frogs rank ninth at 6.6 yards per throw, while the Jayhawks are last at 5.9.
