Kansas senior cornerback Dexter McDonald earned Big 12 defensive-player-of-the-week honors after recording two interceptions in the Jayhawks’ 34-28 victory over Southeast Missouri State.

McDonald’s first interception kept Southeast Missouri out of the end zone in the final seconds of the first half on Saturday night. McDonald, a Kansas City native, also set a career high with three pass breakups in the season opener.

A former standout at Rockhurst, McDonald spent two seasons under Turner Gill before leaving the KU program upon Charlie Weis’ arrival in 2012. After a year at Butler County Community College, McDonald returned to KU and assumed a starting role at cornerback last season. He finished his junior season with 12 pass breakups, two interceptions and 29 tackles.
