ABOUT LONG BEACH STATE (1-7): The 49ers have dropped seven straight games away from home following their 95-59 season-opening win over Cal State Los Angeles. Long Beach State has lost at Wichita State (92-55), North Carolina (93-67), Louisville (88-56), UCLA (114-77) and Washington (94-88). Long Beach State dropped a pair of mainland games in the Battle4Atlantis tournament on Thursday and Friday, falling to Binghamton (72-64) and Florida Gulf Coast (68-67, OT) in Fort Myers, Fla. During the nonconference season, the 49ers will travel more than 23,000 miles. The 49ers were picked to win the Big West Conference in the preseason media poll. They received 19 of 23 first-place votes to finish ahead of UC Irvine, CSUN, UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, Cal State Fullerton, UC Riverside, Hawaii and Cal Poly. Returning starters Justin Bibbins and Gabe Levin were selected to the seven-player preseason all-Big West team. Bibbins’ 164 assists last season were the third-most in a single season at Long Beach. His 85.5 free-throw percentage was the second-best in a season in school history. Bibbins through eight games averages 8.3 points a game with 31 assists to 27 turnovers. Levin, who averaged 9.5 points and 5.9 rebounds per game as a freshman, averages 13.0 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Coach Dan Monson, 156-147, has the most wins of any coach in Long Beach State history. He has more victories than former 49er coaches Jerry Tarkanian, Tex Winter, and Seth Greenberg. With 96 conference wins in nine seasons, Monson is four league wins away from becoming the seventh coach in Big West history to record 100 victories. Long Beach State has made the postseason in four out of the last six seasons. Monson has also been head coach at Gonzaga and Minnesota.
