Kansas falls to North Carolina in NCAA women's soccer tournament

The Kansas women’s soccer team’s run in the NCAA tournament came to a halt against a powerhouse on Friday night in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Jayhawks lost to No. 2 seed North Carolina 2-0 in the second round of the national tournament.

Kansas, which advanced to the second round with a 1-0 double overtime victory over Missouri on Sunday in Lawrence, finished its season 11-6-4.

The Jayhawks, who took second in the Big 12, had had its defense in top form heading into Friday’s game. Kansas had allowed just 17 goals on the season and only one in the previous 340 minutes of game action.

KU held North Caolina scoreless in first half on Friday. But the Tar Heels got on the board with a goal by Madison Schultz in the 53rd minute and then put the game out of reach with a score from Maya Worth in the 79th minute.

Kansas goalie Regan Gibbs made five saves in the game. Meanwhile, the Jayhawks were having a tough time mustering up chances on offense and finished with three shots on goal to the Tar Heels’ eight.

North Carolina — a program that has won 22 national championships — advanced to the round of 16 with Friday night’s victory and will face Clemson, a No. 3 seed on Sunday.
