The Kansas football team’s third starting quarterback of the season will keep his job for at least another week.

Redshirt freshman Carter Stanley will be the Jayhawks’ signal-caller against Texas on Saturday, with coach David Beaty saying the position is being evaluated week to week.

Stanley completed 26 of 38 passes for 171 yards in Saturday’s 31-24 loss to Iowa State. He also had a touchdown pass and interception.

“He actually played a pretty efficient game,” Beaty said. “There were a few throws and a few decisions that I know he’s going to want back and we wish we had back, but you don’t get it that way.”

Beaty pinpointed one play in particular that hurt KU. On a second-and-8 in the fourth quarter, a poor read from Stanley cost the Jayhawks a shot at a long gain, Beaty said.

There were still reasons to be encouraged. Stanley’s 53.7 Total QBR — ESPN’s schedule-adjusted quarterback rating — was the highest mark by a KU starter since Week 1 against Rhode Island. Fifty is considered an average performance.

“I thought he did a good job getting out of trouble with his feet. He didn’t take a lot of sacks,” Beaty said. “Some things I thought he did for his first start were pretty good.”
