Blue-chip guard Troy Brown chooses Oregon over KU, others
Troy Brown, a 6-foot-6 senior combo guard from Las Vegas Centennial High, who is ranked No. 12 nationally in the recruiting Class of 2017 by Rivals.com, on Monday orally committed to Oregon.
He made the announcement via a Bleacher Report video on Twitter.
Brown chose Oregon over Kansas, Alabama, Ohio State, Georgetown, Cal, Arizona and UNLV. He is the brother of KU women’s basketball player Jada Brown.
“At the end of the day the thing that made them stand out over the other schools was the coaching staff,” Brown told Eric Bossi of Rivals.com. “I had a lot of options but at the end of the day I was comfortable with the coaching staff and I was confident in them and how they would let me play and I really felt a lot of trust in coach (Dana) Altman.”
“Also what stood out was their style of play. They get up and down and all of the players they have are versatile and play multiple positions. Also defensively they like to press a lot and that creates turnovers and opportunities,” he added.
Another blue-chip guard, Collin Sexton, will choose a college on Thursday, the second day of the week-long early signing period. Sexton, a 6-1 senior from Pebblebrook High in Mableton, Ga., who is ranked No. 7 nationally, has a list of KU, Alabama, Oklahoma State, North Carolina State, Georgia Tech and Georgia. He will announce during ESPNU’s Recruiting Nation: Basketball Signing Day Special at 5 p.m.
Many analysts consider Alabama the favorite for Sexton. His friend, John Petty, a 6-5 senior shooting guard from Jemison High in Huntsville, Ala., also will announce Thursday. The country’s No. 30-rated player is considering Alabama and Kentucky.
KU, which has three scholarships to give, more if any non-seniors turn pro, has received a commitment from Marcus Garrett, a 6-5 combo guard from Dallas Skyline, who is ranked No. 37 nationally by Rivals.com. He’s expected to sign his letter of intent with KU this week.
