ABOUT KANSAS (1-0 in exhibition play): KU coach Bill Self was pleased with the play of Frank Mason in the Jayhawks’ 92-74 win over Washburn on Tuesday in Allen Fieldhouse. Senior guard Mason barely missed a triple double. He had 21 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in 32 minutes.

“I think I could have done a lot better,” Mason said. “I’m more worried about us as a whole as a team. We have a lot to work on. I have to get the younger guys on board, get the bigger guys finishing well around the basket. We have to communicate better and get a lot better on the defensive end.”

Self was displeased with KU’s rebounding as Washburn won the board battle, 45-44. He also was disappointed with his squad’s 24 turnovers to Washburn’s 20.

“Take care of the ball better and play with a little more cohesiveness offensively,” Self said of his goals for Sunday’s game. “Hopefully we’ll pay attention to detail better. We’ll rebound it better. It wasn’t that we didn’t play hard the other night. It’s just that we didn’t play alert, and we played passive and soft at times. But it wasn’t that we didn’t try. I watched the tape. We looked quick. We did some things, but we just didn’t put ourselves in the right position as much. And I would like to see us take a lot more pride in our first two steps in defensive transition, getting in motion with the ball earlier, big guys sprinting back so that way they can help guard the ball in transition.”

KU will open for real against Indiana on Friday in Honolulu. The Jayhawks will leave for the trip on Tuesday, practice in Honolulu and visit with U.S. military personnel during the week.

ABOUT EMPORIA STATE (0-1 in exhibition play): Arkansas, which forced 30 turnovers, hammered the Hornets 94-44 on Friday in Fayetteville, Ark. The Hornets hit 16 of 51 shots for 31.4 percent and were three of 15 from beyond the arc and nine of 19 at the line. Emporia State trailed 49-16 at halftime. Freshman guard Malik McLemore led the Hornets witih seven points. Soph guard Brandon Hall and senior guard Jevon Taylor added six points apiece. Garin Vandiver, the 6-foot-5 son of coach Shaun Vandiver, grabbed four rebounds.

Emporia State was picked to finish 11th in the 14-team MIAA preseason coaches’ poll. The Hornets have five seniors on the roster. Senior forward Josh Pedersen started the final nine games of last season and averaged 6.1 points per contest. Senior guard Jay Temaat made a team-best 39 three-pointers and averaged 5.4 points per game. Taylor hit 28 threes and averaged 3.8 points per game. Hall is the team’s leading returning scorer at 8.7 points per game.

Emporia State went 13-16 last season and placed 10th in the MIAA with a 10-12 league record. Vandiver is 65-77 in five seasons at ESU. Vandiver played one season at Hutchinson Community College before transferring to Colorado. He was taken 25th overall in the 1991 NBA Draft (by Golden State). He played for nine years for various teams in Europe.

The Jayhawks lead the overall series with Emporia State 20-3, which includes a 7-0 mark in exhibition games. The series dates to 1904.
