Blue-chip point guard recruit Collin Sexton will announce college choice on Nov. 10
Collin Sexton, a 6-foot-1 senior point guard from Pebblebrook High in Mableton, Ga., will announce his college choice on Nov. 10, the second day of college basketball’s weeklong early signing period.
Sexton, who is the No. 7-ranked prospect in the recruiting class of 2017 according to Rivals.com, has a list of Kansas, Alabama, Georgia, Georgia Tech and North Carolina State. His decision date was reported by madehoops.com.
“I will be making my decision on Nov. 10 because that is my sister’s birthday, who is very special to me,” he told madehoops.com. “I also can go into the season with no worries and play my senior season out.”
Coincidentally, No. 30-ranked John Petty, a 6-5 senior shooting guard from Jemison High in Huntsville, Ala., who has a final two of Alabama and Kentucky, also said Thursday he will announce on Nov. 10, the day before KU’s season-opener versus Indiana in Honolulu. KU was on Petty’s original list of schools.
Alabama is considered the leader for Sexton, according to various recruiting services.
“They have been on me the longest, and they have kept building onto that relationship,” Sexton told madehoops.com. “They were the first to offer me, which means a lot. Coach (Avery) Johnson is someone who has played in the league, and I want to get to that level.”
Of KU, Sexton said: “Kansas is a school filled with legacy and a winning tradition. When I was on my visit (for Late Night in the Phog), they treat their players like superstars no matter how much playing time they get. Coach (Bill) Self has coached some really good players at Kansas, and he knows what it takes for them to get to the next level.”
Duval likely to sign in spring
Trevon Duval, a 6-2 senior point guard from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., who is ranked No. 3 nationally, recently decided to reopen his recruitment. Thus, it’s all but certain the blue-chipper, who attended KU’s Late Night in the Phog on an unofficial recruiting visit, will wait until the spring to sign.
Before reopening his recruiting, Duval had a list of KU, Arizona, Maryland, St. John’s, Seton Hall, Oregon, California, Southern California and Villanova.
“For me, it doesn’t matter if you were there from the beginning, fell off a little bit or want to start recruiting me for the first time. I’m going to give everyone a shot like they’ve been there from day one,” Duval said in his blog at USAtoday.com. “I tweeted out that I was reopening everything and since then I’ve heard from Duke and Baylor. My plan is to set some officials and in-homes up in the next few weeks, and, like I said, everyone will get treated like they were an original.”
Duval was born in Queens, N.Y., then went to middle school in Delaware. He attended St. Benedict’s Prep School in Newark, N.J., for two years before heading to Advanced Prep International in Dallas for his junior season. He left Advanced Prep for IMG Academy, ostensibly because API has had trouble getting its core classes accepted by the NCAA Clearinghouse.
“I do want to clear things up about my eligibility because I know there are a lot of rumors going around after I left API,” Duval wrote in his blog. “Before I got to IMG, I met with the academic advisors and our rep here at IMG that works directly with the NCAA and they checked into everything and I’m 100 percent on track to graduate and be cleared through the Clearinghouse with no issues.”
KU offers Todd
Isaiah Todd, a 6-10 freshman power forward from John Marshall High School in Richmond, Va., has been offered a scholarship by KU, Todd revealed on Twitter. Todd has also been offered by Baylor, Penn State, St. John’s, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and others, according to 247sports.com.
Summer trip on tap
KU coach Bill Self confirmed the Jayhawks are planning a foreign trip in the summer of 2017. He said no destination had yet been determined. Italy has been a popular destination of late for college teams seeking the best competition.
The NCAA once every four years allows teams to practice on campus 10 days, then head overseas to play a handful of games. KU actually was eligible to take its foreign trip this past summer, but Self thought the squad needed a break after competing for the United States in the 2015 World University Games in South Korea, then advancing all the way to the NCAA’s Elite Eight in late March.
Henry to play in D-League
Former KU guard Xavier Henry has signed an NBA Development League contract and will play for the Santa Cruz (Calif.) Warriors, according to D-League Digest. The Warriors are affiliated with Golden State’s NBA franchise. Henry, 25, was waived by the Milwaukee Bucks on Sept. 12.
Marlon London injured in Chicago
Former KU and DePaul guard Marlon London, who is a first-year assistant coach at Lewis University in Chicago, was shot and injured Tuesday as a victim in an attempted carjacking in Chicago, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
“Had surgery, says ‘he’ll be back at it in no time,’ ’’ tweeted Michael O’Brien of the Sun-Times.
Marlon’s niece, Devin London, wrote on Instagram that “four guys tried to carjack him and he was able to get away with shoulder and leg wounds.”
London, a 2003 DePaul graduate, is in his first year at Lewis after working five years as assistant boys basketball coach for his alma mater, St. Joseph’s High School in Westchester, Ill.
London — he played for KU in 1998-99 and 1999-2000 before transferring to DePaul — also played professionally in Estonia, Spain and Mexico, according to the Sun-Times.
