Game report: Kansas State 30, UTSA 3
First quarter
Key play: Joe Hubener turned what looked like a certain sack into a 17-yard gain with his legs to keep an early drive alive.
Key stat: The quarter featured seven penalties for 60 yards.
Second quarter
Key play: Will Davis broke up a pass into the end zone on fourth-and-goal to prevent a touchdown.
Key stat: UTSA tight end David Morgan gained 8 yards while carrying safety Nate Jackson on his back.
Third quarter
Key play: Joe Hubener overthrew Andre Davis in the end zone, forcing K-State to settle for a field goal.
Key stat: Jack Cantele made two field goals.
Fourth quarter
Key play: Justin Silmon opened the fourth quarter with a 14-yard touchdown run.
Key stat: UTSA finished the game with 62 plays, 33 fewer than it ran last week against Arizona.
Player of the game: Will Davis. The K-State linebacker led all players in tackles and made the defensive stop of the game when he broke up a potential touchdown pass near the goal line in the second quarter.
Reason to hope: K-State won its first two games by a combined score of 64-3 and didn’t look sharp in either game. Think what may happen if the team improves.
Reason to mope: The Wildcats had to settle for three field goals after entering the red zone and needed several tries to score at the goal line in the first half. They can’t leave points on the field against stronger opponents.
Looking ahead: Next up is a home game against Louisiana Tech, which lost on Thursday against Western Kentucky.
Report card
C | Offense | Joe Hubener showed more good than bad and kept several plays alive with his feet. But his short passes were surprisingly poor. The running game was inconsistent. Perhaps it’s time for Justin Silmon to take over as the starting running back. |
A | Defense | The Wildcats held strong in the first half and then dominated in the second half. Another great all-around showing. |
B | Special teams | It’s nice to have depth at kicker. Jack Cantele was perfect kicking in place of Matthew McCrane. But poor field position off punts was a concern. |
B | Coaching | K-State made some questionable decisions against UTSA, but Hubener was ready for his start and the defense played well. |
