There is no mystery about the injury status of Kansas State running back Dylan Edwards this week.
Head coach Chris Klieman said Monday that Edwards will remain on the sideline with an injured right foot when the Wildcats host the Texas Tech Red Raiders at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday inside Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
“There is something going on with the lower extremity,” Klieman said, “that we continue to do imaging on. The imaging that we’ve received, which it’s been a week or so now ... is that it wasn’t healed. So if it’s not healed, he’s not going to play. We’re not going to put him out there.”
That answers one question about Edwards. But another lingers. Given that he has only seen the field in four games this season, will he sit out the remainder of the season with a redshirt in order to preserve an extra year of eligibility?
Klieman is leaving all options open there. On Monday, he said he has not discussed that possibility with Edwards.
But Klieman did want to make one thing clear about the team’s top running back.
“Trust me, Dylan wants to play,” Klieman said. “But his body is not there yet.”
Edwards was expected to lead the Wildcats in rushing yards this season. But he has only been 100% healthy for one game — a 166-yard rushing performance against UCF.
The junior from Derby has seen limited action in three other games and missed four others entirely. His injury status, and the uncertainty surrounding him, has become a weekly talking point for K-State fans.
For now, it’s possible that Edwards will play again this season. But Klieman is taking a patient approach.
“We will have to revisit that,” Klieman said. “But I want to just make sure the kid gets healthy. That’s most important thing for me, is he gets healthy.”
Edwards has rushed for 205 yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries this season.
Joe Jackson has taken his place as the team’s starting running back and performed well in recent weeks. Jackson has rushed for 382 yards and a touchdown on 95 carries. The Wildcats have given him the ball more than 20 times in each of their past two games. K-State was able to win both of those matchups, 41-28 against TCU and 42-17 over rival Kansas.
