  • Kansas State expects running back Dylan Edwards to likely miss Saturday's KU game.
  • Coach Klieman held Edwards out of practice; Edwards must practice to earn game status.
  • Joe Jackson will continue as lead back after consecutive strong rushing performances.

It’s too early for Kansas State football coach Chris Klieman to know if lead running back Dylan Edwards will be healthy enough to start when the Wildcats play a road game against rival Kansas on Saturday.

But he is not expecting good news on the injury front.

“We’re going with the assumption that he probably wouldn’t play,” Klieman said during a news conference Monday. “If he does, it’s a bonus to us.”

The Wildcats would love to give the ball to Edwards in the backfield Saturday. But that is something they haven’t been able to do much of this season.

Edwards, a junior running back from Derby, has only been at full strength for one game — a 34-20 victory over UCF in which he rushed for 166 yards and a touchdown. He played sparingly in games against Iowa State, Arizona and Baylor. He watched from the sidelines as K-State played North Dakota, Army and TCU.

His lingering injuries have been a source of frustration for K-State fans all season.

Two weekends ago, Edwards strolled the K-State sideline with a walking boot on his right foot.

Klieman said Edwards was held out of practices last week so he could have time to get healthy and potentially return against the Jayhawks.

He will need to practice between now and Saturday to have a chance at suiting up.

Joe Jackson will continue to serve as starting running back if Edwards remains out.

“Joe is doing a good job,” Klieman said. “DeVon Rice is doing a good job. Avery (Johnson, QB) has got to be able to carry the football a little bit. Blake Barnett has got to be able to carry the football a little. There are a lot of different things that go into it.”

Jackson has played well over the past two weeks as the team’s top ball-carrier. He topped 100 all-purpose yards in a narrow loss against Baylor. Then he rushed for 110 yards in a win over TCU. On the season, he has rushed for 313 yards and one touchdown.

Klieman also provided an injury update on defensive end Tobi Osunsanmi on Monday.

He has been declared out for the season.

K-State coaches previously said there was a chance Osunsanmi may be able to return to the field after missing a few weeks of action. But that will not be the case. He finished his year with 20 tackles, including four sacks.
