Jerome Tang’s associate head coach leaving Kansas State for SEC basketball job
Jerome Tang will have at least one new assistant coach on his Kansas State basketball staff next season.
Ulric Maligi, who spent the past three years as an associate head coach for the Wildcats, is expected to leave K-State and accept a similar job under Sean Miller with the Texas Longhorns.
A source close to the situation confirmed the coaching move on Thursday afternoon.
When Tang first arrived at K-State, Maligi was among his first hires along with fellow assistant coaches Jareem Dowling, Rodney Perry, Marco Borne and Anthony Winchester. That group has stayed together throughout Tang’s three-year tenure in Manhattan. But things will look different next season as the Wildcats look to rebound from a losing campaign.
Maligi has a lot of experience coaching in the Lone Star State. K-State actually hired him away from Texas in 2022.
Before that, Maligi worked for Stephen F. Austin, Houston, SMU, Texas A&M and Texas Tech. His familiarity with the region should make him a valuable member of Miller’s new coaching staff in Austin.
Maligi helped K-State win 26 games and reach the Elite Eight during his first season with the Wildcats. But things have not gone well for K-State basketball since that hot start.
The team slumped to 19 wins and a NIT appearance in Year 2. This past season, K-State finished with an overall record of 16-17 and missed out on the postseason entirely.
