Chris Klieman completes Kansas State football staff by hiring new tight ends coach

Chris Klieman’s football coaching staff is complete.

Kansas State is hiring Luke Wells as its new tight ends coach, pending a successful background check.

Wells will bring more than two decades of college coaching experience to the Wildcats. He has previously worked as an assistant at Louisiana-Monroe, Iowa State, Utah State, Texas Tech and Tulsa. He tutored tight ends at every stop along the way.

He is a familiar name for K-State. Luke Wells is the brother of offensive coordinator Matt Wells. They previously worked together at both Utah State and Texas Tech when Matt Wells was the head coach at those schools.

“Luke brings an extensive amount of coaching experience and recruiting energy to our tight end room, which of course has been a big piece to our recent offensive success,” Klieman said in a statement. “I have known Luke for quite a while and even visited with him during previous position openings, and we are thrilled to have him and his family in our program.”

Luke Wells is a 2002 graduate of Oklahoma who played for the Sooners and then helped coach them as a student assistant.

His most recent college coaching job was at Tulsa.

“I am grateful for the opportunity from Coach Klieman to help this staff and be a part of the winning culture at K-State,” Luke Wells said. “I can’t wait to get to work with our talented group of tight ends.”

Klieman had to make a few changes to his coaching staff after Conor Riley left K-State to become the offensive line coach for the Dallas Cowboys.

Riley was the offensive coordinator last season.

Matt Wells will take his place in that role, while Brian Lepak will coach the offensive line after spending the past few seasons with tight ends. Drew Liddle will assist him on the offensive line.

That left one vacant spot on the K-State staff at tight end, which went to Luke Wells.
