About Arizona (16-6, 7-4 Big 12)
The Wildcats have been on fire ever since they got off to a 4-5 start. Arizona lost early games against Wisconsin, Duke, Oklahoma, West Virginia and UCLA. But it has won 13 of its past 14 games.
The Wildcats are fighting for a Big 12 championship thanks to big contributions from Caleb Love and Jayden Bradley. They aren’t the best shooting team around, but they make up for that by making 55.5% of their shots from 2-point range and grabbing the offensive rebound on 36.6% of their misses.
About Kansas State (12-11, 6-6 Big 12)
Jerome Tang’s team is also on a hot streak. The Wildcats have won five straight games to even their record in conference play. K-State has benefited from balanced scoring in recent games. All five of its starters are averaging at least 10 points.
Brendan Hausen and his teammates have been on fire from beyond the arc during their winning streak, as K-State has made at least 10 3-pointers in four straight games. David N’Guessan was named Big 12 Player of the Week after he put up big games against both Arizona State and Kansas.
K-State game prediction
One winning streak is about to come to an end.
Arizona has won six games in a row. K-State has won five games in a row.
This is a battle between the hottest two teams in the Big 12. For the first time in weeks, one of these Wildcats will lose.
Which one?
Good question.
K-State has won its past three home games by an average of 16.3 points. Beating Tang’s team inside Bramlage Coliseum right now is no easy task. But Arizona might be up for the challenge. Tommy Lloyd’s team is 5-1 in Big 12 road games with wins at Cincinnati, West Virginia, Oklahoma State, Arizona State and BYU.
This team won’t be intimidated by the Octagon of Doom.
Arizona might be the best team in the Big 12. It has skilled guards who can create their own shots and athletic forwards to grab rebounds and score in the paint. Its ability to crash the glass and defend down low could be a problem for K-State. Before its winning streak got started, K-State lost several games because it couldn’t rebound against a physical frontcourt.
On paper, this looks like a bad matchup for the home team.
Then again, Arizona doesn’t defend the 3-point line well, which could mean another big shooting day for K-State. If K-State heats up from the outside, it could extend its winning streak and boost its NCAA Tournament resume.
But I’m not so sure this a day when everything goes right for K-State. It’s only natural for college athletes to let down when they are coming off a massive rivalry win like the one K-State scored Saturday against KU. It will come as a surprise if K-State plays its very best in this spot.
I think Arizona will take advantage of that and hand K-State its first loss in nearly three weeks.
Arizona 78, K-State 73
Last game prediction: K-State 75, Kansas 70
Actual score: K-State 81, Kansas 73
Season record: 16-7
Season record ATS: 11-12
Season record O/U: 11-12
