About St. John’s (6-2)
The Red Storm are off to a 6-2 start, with wins over Virginia and New Mexico. St. John’s has tested itself in the early going — the Johnnies have also lost close games against Baylor and Georgia. That could help in a game against K-State, which isn’t battle tested to the same degree. RJ Luis lead St. John’s with 17.6 points per game. Rick Pitino is coaching the Red Storm after previous stops at Kentucky, Louisville and Iona.
About Kansas State (6-2)
The Wildcats have played well in their past two games, as they defeated Longwood 80-64 at the Paradise Jam and then demolished Arkansas-Pine Bluff 120-73 at home. That means they will enter their first true road game of the season with momentum. David N’Guessan and Brendan Hausen lead the Wildcats in scoring, but Dug McDaniel and Coleman Hawkins have also put up nice numbers in games this season.
K-State game prediction
Jerome Tang has traditionally gotten the Wildcats ready to play in their first road game of the season.
He guided K-State to a 63-54 victory at California two seasons ago and the Wildcats followed that up with a 75-60 win at LSU last season. That is obviously a small sample size, but it could prove to be a good omen as K-State gears up for a challenging road test against St. John’s in the Big 12/Big East Battle.
I expect the Wildcats to play inspired basketball in this setting, which should make this a close game.
Will that be enough for K-State to pull off the upset as an 8.5-point road underdog? Maybe. But it will take more than energy and passion for the Wildcats to beat the Red Storm.
St. John’s is far and away the biggest and most physical team that K-State has faced this season. It is also the best defensive team it has seen. The Red Storm haven’t allowed more than 66 points in any of their past three games. They are holding opponents to 43% shooting from within the arc. They are also blocking 16.9% of all shots, a number that ranks ninth in the country.
Brendan Hausen and Max Jones may need to have a productive day from the 3-point line for the Wildcats to win this game. St. John’s is vulnerable on the perimeter, allowing teams to make 34.2% of their outside shots.
I think they will make enough shots for K-State to cover the spread, but not enough to leave New York with a win.
St. John’s 74, K-State 69
Last game prediction: K-State 90, UAPB 63
Actual score: K-State 120, UAPB 73
Season record: 6-2
Season record ATS: 3-5
Season record O/U: 4-4.
