These K-State football players intend to enter the transfer portal before bowl season
A handful of Kansas State football players have already decided to enter the transfer portal and look for new teams rather than remain with the Wildcats for a bowl game.
Four players announced their intentions to leave after K-State ended the regular season with a road loss against Iowa State on Saturday.
Ta’Quan Roberson is the most notable member of that group. The senior backup quarterback entered the transfer portal on Monday as a graduate transfer. He will be looking for more playing time as he returns to college for a rare seventh season.
Roberson played sparingly for K-State this past season, but he did lead the Wildcats on an important scoring drive while starting quarterback Avery Johnson missed a series with injury during a road win at Colorado. Roberson finished his lone season at K-State by completing three of seven passes for 18 yards. He also rushed for seven yards on one carry.
He began his college football career in 2019 at Penn State and spent two seasons at Connecticut before he enrolled at K-State this year. Chris Klieman brought him in to serve as an experienced backup behind Johnson, and Roberson did a nice job in that role.
“Thank you to Coach Klieman and staff,” he wrote on social media. “I am truly grateful for the support of the fans and the relationships I’ve built int he time I’ve spent in Manhattan.”
Other K-State players are on the move: freshman linebacker Kam Sallis, junior defensive back Jordan Dunbar and senior tight end Justin Wolf.
Sallis was a promising linebacker who saw limited playing time as a freshman. He ended the year with one tackle, one sack and a forced fumble. He is originally from Arlington, Texas and committed to K-State as a three-star recruit coming out of high school.
Dunbar joined the K-State football team this season after spending the past two years at Rice. He made three tackles and successfully defended one pass during his time with the Wildcats.
Wolf transferred to K-State from Wagner College and didn’t see much action for the Wildcats.
The fall transfer window doesn’t open for college football players until Dec. 9, a day after the playoff bracket is announced and bowl matchups are locked into place. But graduate transfers can enter the portal at any time, and other players can announce their plans to transfer ahead of time.
More K-State transfers could be on the way. At least four are already in the works.
