Injuries are beginning to pile up for the Kansas State football team at one important position on defense.

Asa Newsom, a redshirt-freshman linebacker who has played in every game for the Wildcats this year, will miss the remainder of the season with an injury that he suffered during a 29-27 victory against Kansas on Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

“We lost him for the season, unfortunately, with an injury,” K-State football coach Chris Klieman said during his weekly news conference on Monday. “We’re down a little bit at linebacker.”

Depth at linebacker could be a concern for K-State as it hits the road for an away game against Houston later this week.

Beau Palmer, a senior linebacker from Overland Park, also suffered a season-ending injury this month.

The Wildcats relied on both Newsom and Palmer as defensive reserves. Without them, K-State will need to get more from top contributors Austin Romaine, Austin Moore and Desmond Purnell, as well as unproven tacklers who might now see extra playing time.

“Some young guys have to be able to step up,” Klieman said, “and we’re going to have to do some things with our package to help that position out.”

Newsom has made four tackles for the Wildcats this season, and he has seen as many as 27 defensive snaps during specific games.

This is not the first time Newsom has suffered a frustrating injury. He also missed the final nine games of his redshirt season with a season-ending injury after he showed promise in his first few appearances.
