Kansas State Wildcats lose starting guard to transfer portal after hoops season ends
One of the first recruits that Jerome Tang brought to Kansas State has played his final game for the Wildcats.
Cam Carter, a 6-foot-3 junior guard who averaged 14.6 points this season and helped K-State reach the Elite Eight last year, plans to transfer after spending two productive seasons in Manhattan.
Carter first shared the news with On3 Sports.
His decision to transfer does not come as a surprise given how often players look for fresh starts in today’s college basketball climate. But his departure will leave Tang and his coaching staff with a hole to fill on the K-State roster heading into next season.
Carter has been a regular in the starting lineup since he transferred to K-State after beginning his college career at Mississippi State. As a sophomore, he was a role player who averaged 6.5 points alongside Markquis Nowell and Keyontae Johnson. But his contributions were instrumental as the Wildcats won 26 games and made a run in the NCAA Tournament.
Much more was demanded of him as a junior and he responded by averaging 14.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists. But his minutes decreased a bit and he found himself in a slump as the season went along. K-State also finished with a disappointing 19 wins and a trip to the NIT instead of March Madness.
Carter is originally from Louisiana, so it would make sense for him to try and transfer somewhere closer to home in the SEC. But there should be several teams interested in him.
Other K-State basketball players are expected to enter the transfer portal in the near future as Tang will undoubtedly look to upgrade roster talent in the coming weeks.
Senior guard Tylor Perry and senior forward Will McNair are the only players from the 2023-24 team that are out of eligibility. Arthur Kaluma and David N’Guessan are candidates to turn pro. Everyone else on the team must decide if the want to remain at K-State or follow Carter into the portal.
