Ohio State joins USC, Miami as latest option for Kansas State QB transfer Will Howard

Former Kansas State quarterback Will Howard is still searching for a new college football team, but not because he has a lack of options.

The senior transfer will reportedly visit Ohio State in the near future and discuss the possibility of leading the Buckeyes on offense next season with head coach Ryan Day. That visit will come after he previously made recruiting trips to Miami and USC.

Howard has become a hot commodity in the transfer portal since he announced his intentions to leave the Wildcats after throwing for 2,643 yards and 24 touchdowns this season. Turns out, plenty of teams could use a veteran quarterback who has won a Big 12 championship, even if he only has one year of college eligibility remaining.

It’s also possible that Howard could decide to turn pro and declare for the 2024 NFL Draft.

But Ohio State presents an intriguing option for him. Howard grew up watching Big Ten football in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. He committed to K-State because he liked the idea of playing for Chris Klieman, and he thrived in his system as an upperclassman. But Manhattan is a 19-hour drive from his hometown. Columbus, Ohio, is only seven hours away.

Playing for the Buckeyes would also give Howard an opportunity to suit up for a college football blue blood. Ohio State is also in need of a veteran quarterback after it lost Kyle McCord to Syracuse and then scored only a field goal during a 14-3 loss to Missouri in the Cotton Bowl.

Miami and USC would also make sense for Howard, but the longer Howard’s recruitment goes on the less likely it seems that he will end up at those destinations. The Hurricanes have been involved with other high-profile QB transfers and USC is suddenly feeling confident in young quarterback Miller Moss after he threw for 372 yards and six touchdowns in a Holiday Bowl victory over Louisville.

No matter what, Howard has some desirable options.

It seems both Howard and K-State will end up in a good situation next season.

K-State looked good in its first game without Howard, as freshman quarterback Avery Johnson led the Wildcats to a 28-19 victory over North Carolina State at the Pop-Tarts Bowl by throwing for 178 yards and two touchdowns to go along with 71 yards and a score as a rusher.
