The Kansas State football team is currently searching for a veteran transfer running back to help replace Deuce Vaughn next season.

Chris Klieman and his coaching staff might be close to landing one.

Treshaun Ward, a 5-foot-10 and 189-pound sophomore who recently finished his sophomore season at Florida State, was on campus this week for a recruiting visit with the Wildcats, according to a post on his Instagram account.

Ward is a coveted player on the transfer market after rushing for 628 yards and seven touchdowns on 95 carries this past season for the Seminoles. He was at his best during his final game when he rushed for 81 yards and two touchdowns during a victory over Oklahoma in the Cheez-It Bowl.

He ranked second on the team behind Trey Benson in rushing yardage in 2022 and is now looking for a new place to continue his college football career.

Ward originally walked-on to Florida State and spent four seasons there. He totaled 1,241 yards and 12 touchdowns with the Seminoles. But he has two years of eligibility remaining because he took a redshirt and played during the COVID-altered 2020 season.

“I want to thank Coach (Jay) Norvell and his staff for investing time and effort in me,” Ward wrote in his transfer announcement. “I couldn’t be more grateful to play college ball as a Seminole.”

There is an obvious hole in K-State’s backfield next season with Deuce Vaughn off to the NFL. The Wildcats must find a way to replace the 1,936 all-purpose yards and 12 touchdowns he produced while helping the team win 10 games and claim a Big 12 championship.

That is one reason why a player like Ward is likely interested in joining the Wildcats.

An impact transfer would likely play alongside redshirt freshman D.J. Giddens next season. Giddens amassed 518 rushing yards and six touchdowns in 2022. Klieman has said he is extremely confident in him moving forward.

It is also possible that reserve running backs such as Anthony Frias and Jordan Schippers could play larger roles next year. Incoming freshman Joe Jackson also has a chance to play early.

But adding a transfer like Ward to the mix wouldn’t hurt.
