PREDICTION
Kansas State and Missouri each won easily against inferior competition last weekend, with the Wildcats flattening South Dakota 34-0 and the Tigers crushing Louisiana Tech 52-24.
We’re about to find out how much stock fans should put into each of those performances.
This clash of former Big 12 rivals will serve as a big step up in competition for both teams. It will also feature a fascinating contrast of styles.
K-State rushed for 297 yards and four touchdowns in its first game of the season, while Missouri allowed just seven yards on the ground in its opener.
Adrian Martinez was only able to muster 53 yards as a passer in Game 1. Could better numbers be on the horizon in Game 2 after Missouri allowed 336 yards and three touchdowns through the air against the Bulldogs?
The Wildcats kept South Dakota out of the end zone while allowing 270 yards, but the Tigers are coming off 52 points and 558 yards. Missouri receivers Luther Burden III and Dominic Lovett will pose big threats to K-State’s secondary.
With so many unknowns, and the potential for rain in the forecast, I’m inclined to pick the team that has a proven star at running back and doesn’t beat itself with mistakes.
Deuce Vaughn has eclipsed 100 rushing yards and a touchdown in seven straight games dating back to last October. You can count on him having another good day, even against a stout Missouri defensive line. K-State also didn’t commit any turnovers in its first game while Missouri gave the ball away twice.
If Martinez provides a highlight or two in the passing game, that feels like enough for the Wildcats to win a close game that falls just shy of the over/under points total.
Kansas State 31, Missouri 24
Last game prediction: Kansas State 41, South Dakota 13.
2022 record on picks: 1-0.
2022 record vs. spread: 1-0.
2022 record vs. O/U total: 1-0.
