Kansas State kicks off 2023 recruiting class by landing coveted guard Darrin Ames
Jerome Tang is still putting the finishing touches on his first recruiting class with the Kansas State men’s basketball team, but that hasn’t stopped him from also building toward the future.
The Wildcats landed their first commitment for the 2023 recruiting cycle on Wednesday. And he is a big name.
Darrin Ames, a four-star point guard from Chicago, announced his intentions to play for K-State after he completes his senior year of high school. His decision was celebrated as excellent news in Manhattan, because he chose the Wildcats over a plethora of other notable suitors.
He held scholarship offers from Arizona State, Illinois, LSU, Marquette, Maryland, Michigan State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Virginia and Wake Forest.
Ames, who goes by the nickname Dai Dai, is the 13th rated point guard in his recruiting class and the nation’s No. 46 recruit overall for 2023, per Rivals. The 6-foot and 160-pound Kenwood Academy product is rated 69th overall by 247sports.
He is considered the top boys basketball recruit in Illinois by several recruiting services.
Winning a recruiting battle for a player like Ames this summer could help Tang build an impressive class during the 2023 cycle. The former Baylor assistant has spent much of his time scrambling to land 2022 recruits and transfers since he was hired as K-State’s head coach in March.
Now he has a foundation in place for future recruiting classes that he can potentially build on as he continues to form relationships with high school coaches and players.
K-State entered the picture later than most schools with Ames, but the Wildcats quickly rose to the top his recruiting list after hosted him on campus for an official visit.
Ames is known as a scoring guard who can shoot from the outside and also slash toward the basket.
